WhiteBox (art center)

WhiteBox Art Center was established in 1998 by Juan Puntes, a former theater practitioner who fled Spain to avoid conscription during the Franco regime. After working in factories and social services, Puntes founded this non-profit space as a laboratory for experimental and politically charged art. Unlike many traditional galleries that maintain a formal, sometimes intimidating environment, the center was designed as a accessible hub for contemporary expression. It has moved across several neighborhoods in its history, constantly reinventing itself while keeping a focus on social justice and interdisciplinary projects. Over the years, the organization has earned recognition for its willingness to host unconventional exhibitions, including work from artists who tackle themes of environmental collapse, immigration, and institutional power.
