Greenway Botanical Garden at the Naval Cemetery

You are walking toward a place that serves as a quiet memorial to the over two thousand people once buried beneath your feet. Between eighteen thirty-one and nineteen ten, this ground operated as the cemetery for the Brooklyn Naval Hospital. While Congress authorized the removal of graves in nineteen twenty-six to transfer them elsewhere, archaeological research later confirmed that many human remains were never recovered and stay buried here to this day. Because of this, the entire site is treated as sacred ground, and construction was strictly limited to ensure the soil was never disturbed more than four inches deep.
