Fourteenth Street Theatre

The Fourteenth Street Theatre stood at one hundred seven West Fourteenth Street, acting as a prominent anchor for New York Citys original theater district. When it opened in eighteen sixty-six, the building was named the Theatre Français and was built specifically to cater to French-speaking audiences through dramas and comic operas. The architect Alexander Saeltzer designed the structure to hold over one thousand patrons, creating a space that would eventually host everything from classic European repertory to popular American minstrel shows.
