General Theological Seminary

The General Theological Seminary stands as the oldest seminary of the Episcopal Church in the United States. Its story is rooted in the early nineteenth century when the institution was established to serve the entire church. In eighteen nineteen, the scholar Clement Clarke Moore, a local landowner, donated a large portion of his family estate to host the school. Moore is remembered today as the author of the classic holiday poem A Visit from Saint Nicholas, which popularized the modern image of Santa Claus. He served as the seminary's first professor of biblical languages for three decades, helping to shape the institution during its formative years.
