Hamilton-Holly House

The Hamilton-Holly House at number four Saint Marks Place stands as a rare survivor of the Federal architectural style in Manhattan. Built in eighteen thirty-one by developer Thomas E. Davis, it was originally designed as a high-end residence for families seeking to escape the overcrowding and disease that plagued the lower parts of the city at the time. Its distinctive features include a white marble basement, red brickwork arranged in a Flemish bond pattern, and a high front stoop topped with a decorative stone entrance. While many homes from this period have been replaced or drastically altered, this building retains much of its original silhouette and historic character.
