Florence Apartment House

The Florence Apartment House, constructed in 1878, was a pioneer in New York City real estate. At a time when well-to-do New Yorkers exclusively lived in private row houses, this building challenged the social stigma against multi-family living. It stood seven stories tall at the corner of East 18th Street and Fourth Avenue, which is now Park Avenue South. The building served as a bold experiment in urban architecture, designed to be the first fireproof apartment house in the city.
