Quad Cinema

The Quad Cinema opened in October 1972 as the first multiplex in New York City. Its founder, Maurice Kanbar, originally intended the ground-floor space of his building to house an off-Broadway theater. When those plans collapsed, he pivoted to film and pioneered the concept of showing four different movies under a single roof, a radical shift from the massive single-screen movie palaces that dominated the era.
