Salmagundi Club

The Salmagundi Club began as a casual gathering of artists in 1871, originally known as the New York Sketch Class. These artists met weekly in the Greenwich Village studio of sculptor Jonathan Scott Hartley to critique one another’s work and refine their craft. The group eventually chose their unusual name from a popular local stew often served during their meetings, though some also link the title to the satirical Salmagundi Papers written by Washington Irving.
