New York City Fire Museum

The building you are approaching at two hundred seventy eight Spring Street is a former firehouse that once served as the home of Engine Company Number Thirty. Constructed in nineteen oh four in the Beaux Arts style, this structure now functions as the official museum of the Fire Department of the City of New York. Before this site was selected in the nineteen eighties, the city’s collection of firefighting artifacts spent decades moving between various fire department headquarters and repair shops, often tucked away in spare bays where they were difficult for the public to access. Today, the museum preserves over ten thousand objects that document the city's firefighting evolution, ranging from leather buckets used in the sixteen fifties to the equipment of modern responders.
