Landing at Kip's Bay

You are standing near the former site of an inlet that once carved deep into the island of Manhattan. This bay served as a natural harbor for the estate of Dutch settler Jacobus Hendrickson Kip. The Kip family farmhouse, built here in the mid seventeenth century, survived for nearly two hundred years and held the distinction of being the last remaining structure from the era of New Amsterdam until its demolition in eighteen fifty one. The site was so notable in its time that visitors of significant stature, including George Washington, were known to partake in the fruit from the estate's famous orchards.
