You are approaching a building that looms over Suffolk Street like a fortress from a different era. Built in eighteen ninety-seven, this structure was designed by Charles B. J. Snyder, the legendary architect who served as the superintendent of school buildings for New York City. At the time, Snyder transformed school construction by prioritizing the health of children in overcrowded neighborhoods. He outfitted this school with massive, oversized windows to flood classrooms with natural light and implemented innovative ventilation systems to ensure fresh air could circulate through every floor. Generations of local children grew up calling this grand, Collegiate Gothic structure their castle.
