United States Post Office (Knickerbocker Station)

The Knickerbocker Station post office, located at one hundred twenty-eight East Broadway, stands as a tangible remnant of the federal government's massive effort to stimulate the economy during the Great Depression. Constructed between nineteen thirty-five and nineteen thirty-seven, the building was one of twelve post offices commissioned in Manhattan as part of New Deal relief projects. Architect William Dewey Foster designed the structure in a Colonial Revival style, utilizing brick, granite trim, and a distinct mansard roof to provide a sense of architectural permanence to a neighborhood facing immense economic hardship.
