Coler Specialty Hospital

Coler Specialty Hospital sits at the northern tip of Roosevelt Island and has provided specialized long-term medical care for over seven decades. The facility takes its name from Bird Sim Coler, who served as the first comptroller of New York City and gained a reputation for his aggressive efforts to root out municipal corruption during the early twentieth century. When the hospital first opened its doors in 1952, its initial population consisted of bedridden patients transferred from the city's aging almshouse located elsewhere on the island.
