Society of Saint Tammany

The building standing before you at the corner of Union Square East and East 17th Street served as the final headquarters of the legendary Tammany Society. Constructed between 1928 and 1929, this neo-Georgian structure was built to project an image of patriotism and stability, featuring custom-made Virginia brick and a design intended to evoke the original Federal Hall. Its facade still bears the inscription of the society's founding in 1786, a date that anchors the site to the earliest years of the young American republic.
