Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Lord

The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Lord rises above the street with five distinct copper onion domes, each topped by a gilded Russian Orthodox cross. Its design is a deliberate homage to the historic Cathedral of the Dormition located inside the Moscow Kremlin. When architect Louis Allmendinger drew up the plans in 1916, he aimed to recreate that ancient, monumental style on this corner in Williamsburg. The building serves as a permanent anchor for a community of immigrants who initially gathered for worship in private homes during the late nineteenth century.
