The massive boulder you are looking at is a remnant of the ancient geological forces that shaped Manhattan. It is composed of Manhattan schist, an incredibly hard and durable metamorphic rock formed hundreds of millions of years ago. While most of this bedrock lies deep beneath the city, hidden under layers of asphalt and concrete, this specific outcropping was pushed to the surface by historic fault lines.
