The Lake Union Drydock Company features a series of long, low, corrugated metal sheds that hug the shoreline, punctuated by the massive wooden hulls of vessels lifted high above the water on floating drydocks. Since nineteen nineteen, this site has functioned as a working repair yard for ships that traverse the Pacific Northwest. When the United States entered the Second World War, the yard converted its operation to build wooden minesweepers for the Navy, completing twenty-eight of them before the conflict ended.
