Jane Street Community Garden

The Jane Street Community Garden sits behind a tall, chain-link fence, marked by overgrown vegetable beds and a cluster of weathered timber tool sheds. Before this patch of dirt became a garden, it held a small, dilapidated house that local activists squatted in during the mid nineteen-eighties. They fought the state government to prevent the site from being paved over for a road extension. After the authorities demolished the house, the residents planted seeds in the rubble, claiming the land for public use.
