Queensland Cultural Centre

The Queensland Cultural Centre spans the riverbank with long, horizontal bands of raw concrete and deep, recessed windows. Designed by Robin Gibson in the nineteen seventies, the complex houses the state’s primary library, museum, and galleries under one sweeping architectural vision. Before this concrete spine emerged, the site held modest industrial warehouses and wharf buildings. When construction began, crews unearthed layers of river silt and old timber pilings, reminders of the Brisbane River that flooded the very ground the foundations now grip.
