Bunyapa Park features a large, metal sculpture of a bunyip resting near the center of the lawn. The park sits on land once held by the Musgrave Park State School, which burned down in nineteen eighty-four. After the fire, residents occupied the cleared site to prevent it from being sold for commercial development. They maintained the space as a community commons for years until the Brisbane City Council eventually formalized the park. The bunyip statue marks this long history of local protest.
