The Commissariat Store Museum

museum

The Commissariat Store is the only building in Brisbane still standing from the Moreton Bay penal settlement. It is made of local porphyry stone and sits on the river bank, built by convicts in eighteen twenty-nine to hold grain and supplies for the colony. The lower floors contain heavy iron bars and small, grated windows designed to keep the food secure. Later, it served as a migrant depot, housing thousands of new arrivals who stepped off ships in the nineteenth century.
