The Brisbane General Post Office sits behind a colonnade of thick sandstone pillars stretching along Queen Street. Its clock tower looms over the pavement, a heavy Victorian landmark that replaced the city's original wooden post office in the eighteen seventies. When the building opened, it functioned as the nerve center for colonial communications, housing the telegraph office that connected Brisbane to the rest of the world. A brass plate near the main entrance still bears the faint, scorched mark of a stray nineteenth century fire.
