Queensland Parliament

The Queensland Parliament House features a mansard roof and sandstone walls patterned after the French Renaissance style. Completed in eighteen sixty-eight, the building houses the state’s legislative assembly in a chamber lined with red leather benches. When the first stone was laid, the colony of Queensland was only nine years old and deeply in debt. The architect, Charles Tiffin, insisted on importing high-quality materials to prove the young colony possessed the stability and ambition to stand on its own in the British Empire.
