Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced

other

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced features a distinctively jagged, pointed tower that rises above the surrounding neighborhood. It holds a significant place in San Jose because the original temple was destroyed by the nineteen twenty-four earthquake, prompting a complete rebuilding of the structure. Architect Jose Maria Barrantes designed this version, incorporating neoclassical and gothic elements that departed from the city's older colonial styles. Local legend says that a wealthy merchant donated the land specifically to prevent the church's demolition.
