Independence Square

Independence Square features a central monument topped by a bronze statue of a woman holding a broken chain, representing the republic’s freedom from Spain. This plaza has served as the political heart of Ecuador since the sixteenth century. When the country’s first independence cry occurred in August eighteen oh nine, rebels gathered right here to proclaim a new government. It remains the spot where protesters face off against police and presidents address the nation from the neighboring Carondelet Palace balcony.
