Plaza de Santo Domingo

The Plaza de Santo Domingo features a bronze statue of Marshal Antonio Jose de Sucre standing tall in the center, his hand pointing toward the Pichincha volcano. This square sits before the church and convent of the same name, a complex that Dominican friars began building in the fifteen eighties. During the early days of the city, the open space hosted public markets and religious processions, serving as a primary gathering point for residents to trade goods and hear city announcements.
