Zabala Artes

Zabala Artes features a heavy, dark wooden door set into the stark white walls of a traditional colonial structure in Quito. This workshop houses a family tradition of wood carving that spans several generations. While the surrounding streets bustle with contemporary city traffic, the artisans inside maintain colonial techniques, carving religious figures and intricate furniture by hand. A visitor might find the master craftsman using the same iron chisels his grandfather imported from Europe over a century ago to finish a single ornament.
