Square Eugène Varlin is defined by a heavy concrete footbridge that splits the space, crossing high above the Saint-Martin Canal. It honors a labor leader who worked at the nearby railway station and organized the first general strike in France during the nineteen hundreds. Varlin was executed by firing squad in eighteen seventy-one, and his ashes were eventually scattered here by his comrades. Today, the park serves as a common spot for workers from the surrounding offices to eat their lunch.
