The Eiffel Tower dominates the Champ de Mars with its web of eighteen thousand iron pieces held together by two and a half million rivets. Gustave Eiffel built this frame for the eighteen eighty-nine World's Fair, intending to take it down after twenty years. The city saved the structure only because its height made it an ideal antenna for telegraphy during the First World War. Guy de Maupassant ate lunch in the tower's restaurant every day, claiming it was the only place he could avoid seeing it.
