Cabaret Au Lapin Agile

The Lapin Agile features a small, low-slung building painted a soft, dusty pink, topped with a sign depicting a rabbit jumping out of a cooking pot. Artists, poets, and musicians gathered here in the early twentieth century to trade songs and sketches for food. Pablo Picasso frequented the cabaret, eventually painting a portrait of the owner, Frederic Gerard, dressed as a harlequin. The painting hung in the room for years, acting as payment for the artist’s many meals and glasses of wine.
