The Basilica of the Sacred Heart stands at the summit of the hill, covered in white travertine stone that stays bright even on cloudy days. It remains a stark contrast to the dark limestone of older Parisian churches. After the French defeat in the eighteen seventy war, local leaders built this house of prayer to restore moral order to the city. Its construction took forty years, and the architect Paul Abadie based his design on the Romanesque style he saw in churches across southern France.
