Église Saint-Pierre de Montmartre

The limestone walls of the Eglise Saint-Pierre de Montmartre sit quietly against the sky, marked by the severe, thick stone of the twelfth century. This building remains one of the oldest churches in Paris, built on the foundations of a Roman temple dedicated to Mercury. When the architect began construction in eleven thirty-three, they scavenged four ancient marble columns from that earlier pagan site to hold up the nave. Two of those original Roman columns still support the interior arches today.
