The Théâtre du Grand Guignol occupies an old chapel hidden away in a narrow cul-de-sac of the ninth arrondissement. Its facade keeps the somber profile of a nineteenth-century religious building, but inside, the space became famous for staging gore. Oscar Metenier founded the theater in eighteen ninety-seven specifically to show the darker side of Parisian life. Audiences paid to witness staged murders, acid attacks, and surgical operations, measuring the quality of a production by how many people fainted in the aisles.
