The Gustave Moreau Museum occupies a narrow, four-story townhouse on rue de la Rochefoucauld, distinguished by the massive, light-filled studio windows stacked on its top floors. Gustave Moreau lived and painted here, eventually transforming the family home into a repository for his entire life's work. When he died in eighteen ninety-eight, he left over fourteen thousand pieces to the French state. He insisted the collection stay in these rooms exactly as he arranged them, keeping his easel and personal sketches in place.
