The Galerie Vivienne is a covered walkway topped by a long, arched glass ceiling that lets in steady, muted light. It connects the Rue des Petits Champs to the Rue Vivienne, serving as a quiet shortcut between busy streets. In eighteen twenty-three, the Parisian notary Marchoux commissioned this passage to attract wealthy shoppers away from the nearby Palais Royal. He lined the floors with colorful mosaic tiles and decorated the walls with neoclassical carvings of nymphs and goddesses that remain in place today.
