The Palais Royal displays a long, rhythmic arcade of identical stone arches surrounding an inner courtyard. While it serves as the seat of the Ministry of Culture today, it began as the private residence of Cardinal Richelieu in the sixteen thirties. During the minority of Louis the Fourteenth, the palace became a volatile headquarters for the rebellious nobility. It later opened its gates to the public as a center for gaming, cafes, and political pamphlets, eventually becoming the cradle of the French Revolution.
