Cimetière de Montmartre

The Cimetière de Montmartre sits deep within a former gypsum quarry, tucked beneath the iron arches of the Caulaincourt bridge. It opened in eighteen twenty-five on the site of these abandoned mines, which held grim remnants from the French Revolution. When the city needed space, they used the deep pits as mass graves before organizing the terrain into the terraced necropolis seen today. Edgar Degas and Alexandre Dumas fils rest here, but the iron bridge remains the landmark that defines the view.
