The Chapelle expiatoire sits tucked behind a high stone wall, recognizable by the solemn, classical portico facing a quiet garden. Built on the site of the former Madeleine cemetery, it marks where the remains of Louis the Sixteenth and Marie Antoinette were buried after their executions in seventeen ninety-three. King Louis the Eighteenth ordered its construction in eighteen fifteen to atone for the revolution. Architect Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine designed the interior to hold marble statues of the royal couple in their final moments.
