Chapelle expiatoire

The Chapelle expiatoire stands as a somber monument to a period of intense upheaval in French history. Its construction was commissioned by King Louis the Eighteenth to atone for the executions of his brother, King Louis the Sixteenth, and his sister-in-law, Queen Marie Antoinette, during the French Revolution. While the royal couple was originally interred in the cemetery that once occupied this land, their remains were later relocated to the Basilica of Saint-Denis. This site serves as a permanent memorial, marking the exact ground where they were first buried after being guillotined.
