Vigne du Clos Montmartre

A steep, walled vineyard clings to the northern slope of the hill of Montmartre. This is the Vigne du Clos Montmartre, the last working farm in a neighborhood long since swallowed by the expansion of Paris. In the nineteen thirties, the city intended to build housing here until a group of local artists and residents intervened, insisting on planting vines instead. They convinced the city to preserve the land as a green space, and that vineyard remains a stubborn, verdant anomaly.
