Church of Saint-Roch

The Church of Saint-Roch displays a jagged, scarred stone facade where pockmarks from musket balls remain visible near the entrance. Louis the Fourteenth laid the first stone in sixteen fifty-three, intending to create a grand monument to honor Saint Roch. During the French Revolution, the steps leading to the main door became the front line of a royalist insurrection. Napoleon Bonaparte ordered his artillery to fire into the crowd, leaving the stone exterior permanently marked by the battle that secured his power.
