The Eglise Saint-Roch displays a jagged, pockmarked facade where stone chunks were gouged out by artillery fire during the French Revolution. This baroque church served as the final stronghold for royalist forces in seventeen ninety-five, when they attempted to seize control from the revolutionary government. A young Napoleon Bonaparte directed his cannons toward these very steps to suppress the uprising. The scars in the masonry remain today as evidence of that confrontation, marking the spot where the future emperor first made his mark.
