The Tour Jean-sans-Peur rises as a solitary, crenelated stone tower above the dense rooftops of the second arrondissement. This is the last remnant of the grand residence of the Dukes of Burgundy, built by John the Fearless in the early fifteenth century. It served as a fortified refuge during the chaotic power struggles of the Armagnac-Burgundian Civil War. Inside, a single spiral staircase winds around a stone column carved with the intricate foliage of oak, hawthorn, and hops.
