The taxidermy shop at forty-six Rue du Bac occupies a space that feels like a nineteenth-century scientific expedition frozen in time. Rows of stuffed lions, exotic birds, and cabinets full of colorful beetles line the wood-paneled walls. Jean-Baptiste Deyrolle founded the shop in eighteen thirty-one to provide specimens for naturalists and schools. When a devastating fire nearly destroyed the collection in two thousand eight, admirers from around the world sent donations to save the creatures and the weathered cabinets they inhabit.
