Square Frédérick Lemaître

landmark

The Square Frédérick Lemaître marks the end of the Canal Saint Martin where the water slips into a tunnel under the Boulevard Jules Ferry. It holds a bronze bust of the nineteenth century actor who performed at the nearby Ambigu Comique theater. Lemaître gained fame for his portrayals of tragic heroes and melodramatic villains, often playing to rowdy crowds. He died in poverty, yet this small patch of green preserves his name on a site once occupied by his former stage.
