École Militaire

The École Militaire was founded by King Louis XV in seventeen fifty-one to address a desperate need for professional military leadership. After heavy losses during the War of the Austrian Succession, the French army realized that its officer training was inadequate. The school aimed to train five hundred cadets from impoverished noble families, providing them with a rigorous education in mathematics, engineering, and tactical skills. This initiative was championed by the King’s mistress, Madame de Pompadour, and the financier Joseph Pâris-Duverney to ensure the French military could compete with its rivals on equal footing.
