Symbolic Globe

The structure you are looking at is the Symbolic Globe, a minimalist, fifteen-meter-wide sculpture made of approximately ten thousand ultra-resistant aluminum rods. It was designed by the Danish structural engineer Erik Reitzel for the United Nations Summit on Social Development in Copenhagen in 1995. During that summit, thousands of delegates from around the world participated in assembling the rods, creating a physical manifestation of international cooperation. Later that year, the sculpture was moved to the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris, where it remains today as a permanent emblem of global interdependence.
