Passage Jouffroy

Passage Jouffroy stands as a significant milestone in nineteenth-century architecture and urban development. Completed in eighteen forty-six, it marked the first time a Parisian shopping arcade was constructed entirely from a framework of iron and glass. This technological leap allowed for a vast, arched roof that bathed the interior in natural light, setting a standard for the covered walkways that would soon become icons of the city. Beyond its structural innovation, the passage was also the first in Paris to feature underfloor heating, a radical comfort for shoppers escaping the damp and mud of the nineteenth-century streets.
