Folies Bergère

The Folies Bergère began its life in eighteen sixty-nine with a different name. It opened as the Folies Trévise, taking its title from the street by its stage door. The local aristocrat who gave that street its name, the Duc de Trévise, despised the theater and objected to his family name being associated with such a rowdy venue. The theater eventually bowed to his disapproval and rebranded itself in eighteen seventy-two, choosing a name inspired by the nearby Rue Bergère, which translates to the street of the shepherdess.
