The equestrian statue of Marshal Joseph Joffre is a bronze monument that stands at the edge of the Champ de Mars, directly facing the Ecole Militaire. Unveiled in nineteen thirty-nine, the sculpture portrays the general mounted on a horse in full military uniform. The work was created by the sculptor Maxime Real del Sarte, who won a national competition to design the tribute. To fund the project, organizers sold special postage stamps bearing Joffre's portrait, which helped build broad public support for the memorial across France.
