You are walking toward Place Joachim-du-Bellay, a lively square that sits directly over the site of the Holy Innocents' Cemetery. For nearly a millennium, this ground served as the primary burial site for Paris, eventually holding the remains of approximately two million people. By the eighteenth century, the area had become so overcrowded that the ground level inside the cemetery walls rose eight feet above the surrounding streets.
